MISSION

Climate Scientists Australia is an independent group of senior scientists who hope to improve decisions on climate-related issues in Australia by encouraging better use of the science.

Through our extensive research and our knowledge of the rapidly-accruing peer-reviewed international scientific literature, we are convinced that climate change is already happening, and are concerned about its potential impacts if emissions continue unchecked.

Deciding on the best strategies for reducing emissions is a complex social, political and economic challenge; nonetheless, any decisions must take into account the best and latest scientific information on climate change and its potential impacts. However, these are complex scientific topics, which has meant that scientific information about them is often ignored, confused or misinterpreted.

We are greatly concerned about these serious shortcomings in the way scientific information on climate and climate change is being used. We have come together as a group to provide and promote the use of scientifically-based evidence in decision-making on these issues.

As senior climate scientists we consider it our responsibility to provide impartial and authoritative information. We aim to present a balanced and comprehensive view on climate-related issues, counter misrepresentations of climate science, and bring new scientific findings to the attention of policy makers, business leaders, the media and the public.

All outputs from our group will be based on science or the policy implications clearly deducible from the science. Our group is not affiliated with or represented by any other organisation, and we do not directly advocate for any specific policies. All members of the group are donating their time and expertise to the group’s efforts.

Secretariat

ClimateWorks Australia, a new partnership between Monash University and the Myer Foundation, is hosting the Climate Scientists Australia Secretariat. This central coordination hub allows the group to operate effectively, and assists in the dissemination of the group’s work. It includes development and maintenance of this website, secretarial support, and coordination of group meetings, events and publications.

ClimateWorks Australia neither speaks on behalf of the group nor has any editorial control over information produced by the group.

Supporting Climate Scientists Australia

Further funding is needed to ensure that the Secretariat and the group continue to function and have a wide influence. Donations to support Climate Scientists Australia can be made through the ClimateWorks Action Fund.
